Futile
2023
Materials: Graphite, plastic film
This triptych graphite work portrays 3 dead-end signs, each experiencing distortion. The leftmost panel begins with a single point that seeks to break through the plastic film. In the second panel, another point was added, stretching the plastic in opposing directions. In the last work, the pressure is removed, but the effect lingers. I aimed to capture the folds and tension created with every line. The letters in the film are warped and distorted by the pressure, symbolizing how societal rules were imposed upon a community later on.
In part two of the project, I cut out the three signs and wrapped them in plastic films. Then, my classmates and I ripped away the film. However, after we peel back every layer, we ultimately arrive at the drawings themselves. No matter how hard we scratch at the surface, the effort to break through is futile. This raises the question: Is humanity stuck in an illusion of change— a loop— or is there a way out?
